Samsung Jet review

Posted by karthikjcecs on December 26, 2009

My recent purchase is samsung Jet s8003 smarter than samtphone handset. Specification wise it looks very good and we can say its value for money. When I started using it, I started feeling that it is missing basic features and those missing features making it unusable and realised why it is priced low to its compitators. It has features to say but not to use. Confused, let me clarify with few examples –

  • It has Got wi-fi support but does not have basic authentication protocol like EAP-TLS, cannot connect to office network.
  • It has bluetooth but cannot have audio streaming wit a normal handsfree, where as my basic nokia 3500c  use to stream audio with the same handsfree.
  • It does not have a clipboard, cannot copy paste text seems to be a basic feature missing. Even my nokia 3500 ( priced at 4k) has this copy – paste feature. Being a touch screen and you cannot copy is really shame.  Opera mini 5.1 beta helped me to an extent, it has got copy-paste feature, though I cannot paste it outside Opera, I can can save content into my email drafts.
  • No customization in phone profiles. Cannot create profiles or set timed profile changes.
  • Java app installation is extremely difficult, you need to install some third part application on to you pc and do some circus to install a java app, here is detailed procedure.
  • you can copy links using the default browser but you should send the copied link to someone using sms. Yes, if you copy a link, the link get pasted in sms editor and can do nothing than sending it to someone or saving as a text message for yourself.
  • It has got some memo widget but it does not get saved as files, i do not know what to do wit those memos.
  • It has got some motion recognition stuff which we can never use.
  • It cannot even be compared to a smart phone.
  • Search in SMS and Email pop3 client is missing.
  • Contact search of not inline search. It takes you to the text editor where you need to enter name to search and press “Done”, then it comes back and gives you results.
  • Touch screen is not that sensitive at corners of the screen

Few good points:

  • Liked camera, it awesome. Good 5mp loaded with shooting modes and modes does work fantastically.
  • Signal reception, music player, audio quality are awesome.
  • Touch sensitivity is very good, comparable to c type. It acknowledges the touch with a vibration, which is impressive. Also scrolling the list gives an effect of speed of scroll though vibration intensity and interval of vibration. It is really cool feature.
  • Display is awesome, gives a really cool effect. Also possible to view in sunlight on setting brightness to max.
  • Handwriting recognition is acurate  and consistent, though we cannot use it much as it becomes slow compared to typing
  • Speed is good, we can feel the power of 800Mhz processor, apps gets initiated at super fast. Also repose time is great.

Bottomline: It is a good multimedia phone but NOT a smart phone

    Nice review Kari.

Here is the comparison of my phone(HTC Pharos) with yours.

    1. No Wifi. So no question of wireless connectivity. However, when connected on GPRS it can act as a modem for my comp.
    2. It has bluetooth and audio streaming too. Haven’t checked music playing and all.
    3. It does have a clipboard and I can use it across different applications. One very good feature.
    4. Profiles – Till date, my knowledge on profiles is limited to silent, general modes etc. And, certainly even yours supports it. I don’t know which other kind of profile you are talking about.
    5. Application installation is very smooth and there are lots of third party applications for Windows mobile 6.1 which is one big plus of using a Windows mobile.
    6. Can open links from SMS too.
    7. Memos do get stored as files. I can have audio memos too in addition to text memos.
    8. No motion sensors
    9. It is a smartphone.
    10. No search feature for SMSes. File search feature is available.
    11. Inline search available.
    12. Happy with the touch sensitivity. But no vibration mode. So we cannot feel when we touch something. Vibration for every touch in your phone is a big plus.

      Hi Arun,

Thanks for the comparison. It is very useful. Few clarifications,

      Point 2:
Jet has got audio streaming capability just that you need to have stereo handsfree. Streaming while using mono bluetooth does not work. Where as in Nokia phone, streaming while using mono also works. For music it is preferable that you use stereo as using mono for music is not that great.

I need your clipboard though, fed up with remebering and retyping, I hate that part. Oh Samsung!!! do something for this. Give a firmware with clipboard support please.

Most of the problems you are facing is becoz it has got samsungs proprietary OS. Had it been sporting a Symbian or windows or android most of these problems would have been ironed out. I also think you dont get much third party apps for the Jet.

      Hi Bipin,

I knew that I would miss many apps that are compatible only with Symbian and windows, but went for it because the light weight OS attracted me. As expected it is super fast compared windows and symbian phones. A good 800Mhz qualcom chip with light weight Rex OS with less that 5KB footprint is a real good deal. I also thought that I could get plenty of java apps which I can use, but unfortunately not all powerful apps are Java based and are specific to OS. Samsung has release SDK for app development for their phones, hope to get few good apps which I can use. Let me wait and see.

Also try to put comparison with your phone, it helps others

      Thanks

    Hi Karthik
You forgot to mention DLNA (which allows you to stream your media on ur cellphone to devices such as PS3/XBOX), you also forgot to mention the 16GB mem card support. You also forgot to mention flash lite support. You also forgot to mention mail ‘push’ service which works for accounts such as email configured through POP3. You also forgot to mention the various sound presets such as HD, 5.1 Surround for various media. You also forgot to mention widgets for facebook and others (though they are sucky to say the least). You also forgot to mention uploading pictures directly to facebook, flickr and others. Other than copy/paste there is very little that you can say is a fault with this phone 🙂 in this price range (~15 K). and ooh yea…you also forgot to mention that you can see movies on ur cellphone using the TV OUt cable…and ooh yea…you also forgot to mention the DV video recording (high on FPS) 🙂

      Hi Phat,

I can see your condition as “A Fish herself coming inside a shark’s mouth”…
you also forgot to mention the 16GB mem card support
I do not think it is a great thing to mention. Can we mention each and every feature like, you can do voice calls, send sms, off course receives calls, receives sms.. 😛

You also forgot to mention flash lite support
Really do not know what I can do with this feature except for creating some funny animations, sorry

You also forgot to mention mail ‘push’ service which works for accounts such as email configured through POP3
I should have mentioned this as POP3 was WORKING!!! and it was fantastically receiving “TEXT” version of the emails. When other smart phones receives html emails, being smarter than smart phone, samsung does not fear to Loudly tell that they support POP3 with text version 😛

You also forgot to mention the various sound presets such as HD, 5.1 Surround for various media
Apologize for this. Though I have mentioned audio is good, I should have mentioned the 5.1 surround effect. This is the one I most appreciated in the phone

You also forgot to mention widgets for facebook
Wooohaaahaaaa…. I have to laugh left and right for this… WIDGETS???? A browser link is called as WIDGET? Damn it!! it opens in that default dolphin browser when I open your Facebook Widget.. Samsung people are showing smartness here but they have not given a smarter phone 😛

You also forgot to mention uploading pictures directly to facebook, flickr and others
Yet again a left and right laugh for this. What is big deal with this. Utilizing the mobile version of the websites, we can upload using any damn basic phone which had data capability. Do you have any application to maintain facebook, flickr account where I can upload images without opening the browser?? Please tell me if it is there..

Other than copy/paste there is very little that you can say is a fault with this phone 🙂 in this price range (~15 K)
I paid 19k, now it is reduces for the obvious reason. Still want to know about the sad story of the phone, read this – https://karthikjcecs.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/samsung-jet-frustration-cond/

And importance of copy/paste for a smart phone, read this – https://karthikjcecs.wordpress.com/2009/12/31/samsung-jet-copy-paste-feature/

you also forgot to mention that you can see movies on ur cellphone using the TV OUt cable
To watch the movies I have to buy a samsung tv I think, could not make it work with our old Akai TV. Though it is old, it has a inputs, which is working as I have played videos from my camcorder.

you also forgot to mention the DV video recording (high on FPS)
I did not find any difference in video recording.
